Technicolor Dreamcake?

February 4th, 2019

It all began with one vision: a musical production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor  Dreamcoat at Breslau Mennonite Church. After thousands of hours invested into rehearsals, marketing, costume making, set design, ticket sales, and performances, the show was truly a must-see performance for the over 1,200 spectators who came out to watch January 31 – February 3, 2019.

The cast and crew of the show are all members or have close connections with the church, including the directors, band, lighting, costumes and audio. I was privileged to work backstage during performances, helping with prop passes, costume changes, and unexpected surprises that occurred during the show.

In celebration of the fantastic accomplishments and hard work of the cast and crew, I put together a cake with different symbols from the show itself. The cake took around 8 hours to make all together, with the bottom tier being carrot cake with cream cheese icing, the top chocolate-raspberry, and the coat is made from rice krispies.

Some of the design features of the cake include:

The Coat (Obviously!): Joesph’s coat is a pivotal piece of the Genesis story, the gift he receives from his father as a sign of his love. This makes his brothers very jealous, and their actions are what bring Joseph to both his low and high points in the show.

The Sheep: The sheep are seen mainly as played by the kids during “Jacob and Sons”, an important piece of the biblical family, which was also a point you could hear rumbles of laughter in the audience as they made an appearance.

The words: Along the back of the cake you can find the names of the different songs in the musical, everything from “Potiphar” to “Benjamin Calypso”.

The Curtain: The bottom tier features a black curtain, a symbolic component of the show itself, as the BMC sanctuary was transformed for musical theatre using black curtains as a backdrop for the story.

The Joseph Logo: An important piece of the cake, this was designed by Chris Steingart, both the lead playing “Joseph”, as well as an important part of the marketing and production of the show. Well done Chris!

Go Go Joe!

I am so proud of my church community for the work that went into the production, and thank you to anyone who came to watch and support the ministry of Breslau Mennonite Church. I look forward to the next one!
